FLANIGAN, HARRY DANIEL
July 7, 1925 - February 9, 2008
Harry, of Aurora, passed away February 9, 2008 at the VA Nursing Home in
Aurora, Colorado. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather, father-in-law, uncle and godfather.
Harry was the fifth child out of eight born to Daniel and Mary (Van Houdenos)
Flanigan in Spalding, Nebraska on July 7, 1925. He graduated from Spalding High
School in 1944. On January 20, 1945, Harry was drafted into the United States
Army. He served in WWII as part of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign on the island of
Okinawa. He was discharged from the army on December 6, 1946, and then he returned
to Spalding.
Harry married Georgina Kurtenbach on April 26, 1948 at St. Michael's Catholic
Church in Spalding. They farmed until 1956, when they moved to Denver with their
five children. On August 19, 1957, Harry started working for the City and County
of Denver as a Deputy Sheriff. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of service. He
was a parishioner of St. Therese Catholic Church in Aurora for 52 years. He was
a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Club. Harry enjoyed
the Broncos, playing slow-pitch softball, riding horses, and family gatherings
so he could share a good story or laugh.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Mary, brothers, Thomas
(Marie), James (Jessie), Daniel, sisters, Marie (Clarence Neison) (Donald)
Williams, Madeline, and Judy (Glen) Fender.
He is survived by his wife, Georgina, and their five children, Joseph
(Debra), Mary Anna (John) Teller, Patrick (Mary Lou), Jane (Gregory) Comer, and
Joan (Francisco) Ferrer. His grandchildren include: Joanna Downing Flanigan, Patrick (Jamie), Jonathan, and Harold (Julie) Teller, Anna Ferrer, and Mathew (Savannah),
Phebe and Mary Comer. His great grandchildren include: Lauren and Emily Teller,
Samantha and Jessica Teller, and Daniel Comer. He is also survived by his
brothers, Michael (Doris) Flanigan, and Harry (Kathy) Van Houdnos,
brother-in-law, Reverend Harold Kurtenbach and many other relatives and friends.
Family and friends are invited to the rosary on Thursday, February 14th at 7
p.m. and the Funeral Mass, Friday, February 15th at 10 a.m. Both will be held at
St. Therese Church, 1243 Kingston St. Aurora, CO. Interment will follow the Mass
at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver, CO (12:00 pm area "A"). In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Therese Building Fund.
